For this competition we have developed two ways to judge the submitted self-portraits
and accompanying biographies. The grand prize will be decided by our panel
of judges. We are honored to have on our panel:
Steve Buscemi, a celebrated
character actor in film and theater who has been a long time friend to the
arts;
Chris Weitz one of the top producers / directors working in
Hollywood today;
Helen Hsu, an up and coming curator currently working at
the Guggenheim museum in Manhattan; and
Sascha Lewis taste-maker and
founder of Flavorpill whose networks reaches deep into the arts and
cultural happenings in cities around the world. Brief bio's of all our

In partnership with
Gawker Artists we are also proud to present the
people's choice award. After creating your portfolio you will have the
opportunity to publicize it to the world. The highest rated portfolio will
win $1,000 cash, a huge publicity push through Gawker Artists and an Art-Star
reception in New York City.
Steve Buscemi: Actor, Director and Lover of Art
Born in Brooklyn, New York, Steve Buscemi was raised a world away from the life he would later lead. In the early
80's Buscemi worked as a fire-fighter with FDNY Engine 55 while
studying acting at the Lee Strasberg Institute. Eventually he found his
footing with the experimental theater company The Wooster Group
and soon had his break into major motion pictures. Today, Steve
Buscemi is seen as one of the most important character actors of our
age with roles in such films as:
Resevoir Dogs,
Fargo,
Ghost World,
The Big Lebowski, and the upcoming
Pete Smalls is Dead.
Chris Weitz: Director & Producer
An Academy Award nominated producer, writer and director, Weitz
is best known for his work on the comedy films
American Pie and
About a Boy, as well as directing the film adaptation of the novel
The Golden Compass. He has written or produced over a dozen
films and made his lead acting debut in the Sundance Film Festival
hit
Chuck & Buck. Weitz recently completed his latest directorial
projcet:
Twilight : New Moon the second hit film in the series.
Helen Hsu: Curatorial Assistant at the Guggenheim Museum
Helen Hsu lives, bikes, and writes in Brooklyn. Her interest in
contemporary art is focused on works that challenge and critique
traditional forms and means of display. She is a Curatorial
Assistant at the
Guggenheim Museum, having worked on the
survey exhibition
Art in America: 300 Years of Innovation
presented in Beijing, Shanghai, Moscow, and Bilbao.
Sascha Lewis: Founder of Flavorpill
Sascha co-founded
Flavorpill, an online arbiter of art, music and
culture. Sascha and his partner Mark Mangan started Flavorpill from
their New York City apartments in 2000 and since have become an
international phenomon. The company brings attention to events, artists
and unique happenings as well as has hosting their own events in
museums such as the
Guggenheim, The New Museum and
MOMA.
